Some argue that the Bible is contradictory concerning who was King Abijah’s mother, Maacah or Micaiah. The argument is that 2 Chronicles 11:20 says that Maacah was King Abijah’s mother, but 2 Chronicles 13:2 says that Micaiah was King Abihah’s mother. However, there is a very simple explanation that solves this alleged contradiction in the Bible.
Scriptures – Was Maacah or Micaiah King Abijah’s Mother?
Maacah Was King Abijah’s Mother – 2 Chronicles 11:20
After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.2 Chronicles 11:20
Micaiah Was King Abijah’s Mother – 2 Chronicles 13:2
He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.2 Chronicles 13:2
Maacah and Micaiah Were Two Different Spelling for the Same Name
The simple answer to this alleged contradiction is that Maacah and Micaiah were two different spellings for the same name. This is not the only example in the Bible of one person having two names, or two different spellings for the same name.
